As the new school year begins, there are more service learning opportunities than ever before, especially with  student tutoring. “Wooten Elementary” is something you have probably seen on the MobileServe app, and you might be wondering: What is this, and why should I participate in it? To answer these questions, I talked to one of the people who brought the service learning opportunity to MobileServe, Charlsie Yarger.

Charlsie recommends that people come to this program, hosted on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-5:45 pm, because “the kids are super grateful for any extra volunteers and even remember their names.”  She adds that “your work won’t go away unnoticed, and you will have a very fun time helping with whatever project we are doing.”

Charlsie recalls a moment where she felt that this place was worth coming back to every week, when she saw “the kids remember the things [she] taught them last lesson, and them being excited about telling [her].” She also adds onto this by saying that “everytime I see them at the elementary school and wave to them before going into the classroom, they are always energetic and want to say hi.”

Lastly, to those who are daunted by the idea of tutoring, student leaders like Charlsie say not to worry! “Go for it and be enthusiastic with the kids,” she states, “just be present, make connections with the kids, and help them keep going in their project.”
