It’s no secret that Austin has been growing exponentially these past years. For better or worse, the number of places impacted by the infinite construction and newcomers are impossible to count. There is one project the city of Austin recently took on and that is the beloved Congress strip. The same street that cuts through the city and poses as a runway for none other than the Texas capitol, and the home of the famous bridge with the dramatic unveiling of the bats every sunset.
On the other side of the bridge, there’s the adored South Congress. Also called SoCo, this roughly one-mile strip is a bright shining star in the ever changing universe we call Austin. Be it summer or winter, morning or night, everyone crowds the sidewalks in preparation for a day’s worth of shopping or exploring with friends. So, it has it all: shopping, atmosphere, location, and culture. And, of course, the other thing to make a good day great: delicious food. Below are the staples that make South Congress even more of an attraction.
Joann’s
Although a relatively new addition to south congress, Joann’s Fine Foods is impossible to miss with its neon light sign illuminating the sidewalk. It’s the little things that draw people here; the fresh-squeezed orange juice and cozy-diner feel encapsulates Joann’s in a heartbeat. From pastries and breakfast sandwiches to tacos and enchiladas, comfort food of all types are brought to your table, the delicious aroma filling the senses. If you need a bite to eat before the shopping begins, the weekend brunch is the highlight of Joann’s.
Sunlife Organics
Contrasting Joann’s, Sunlife Organics is the perfect place to grab a bite or drink to revive you in the midst of the day. After almost a decade of success in California, a location opened up right in the middle of south congress. Their vibrant smoothies brimming with protein and their colorful acai bowls are the perfect shopping-break snacks. Their most popular orders are “The Fountain of Youth” and “Billion Dollar Smoothie”, which are as amazing as they look. Plus, when you go, be on the lookout for their seasonal additions!
Aba
“Aba”, father in Hebrew, also has roots that date back to California. This atmospheric restaurant is an oasis tucked away behind the stores. Typically for fancier occasions, scheduling a reservation is necessary in order to get a guaranteed table. Their Mediterranean cuisine stands out just as much as their decor, which spruces the place up and makes for a lively dining experience. Their lunch, dinner, and brunch menus contain a number of savory meals, some standard and others unexpected but nevertheless all delicious. Warning: it is so good but also decadent, so you should come hungry and absolutely leave with leftovers.
Perla’s
Built in 2009, Perla’s was established in South Congress as a great choice for seafood lovers. They have fresh fish and oysters imported from all coasts everyday and delicious desserts. Situated on a beautiful open patio in the middle of the South Congress strip, the atmosphere of Perla’s pulls people like magnets to their doors. While Perla’s does have some sea-free options, it’s best to go here if you are ready to try many tasty seafood dishes.
Home Slice
Not only does Home Slice have delicious New York-style pizza, but the restaurant itself has a buzzing electricity. Ping pong tables in the back, the smell of savory pepperoni and dough filling the room, and more make Home Slice the perfect lunch or dinner spot with friends. The permanent laughs and crowds are proof of Home Slice’s popularity. Any pizza staple imaginable arrives on your plate like nectar from the Gods. Group settings are best here because the pizza slices are very large!
Guero’s
Thirty years old next year, Guero’s has been a reliable constant, being one of few surviving Austin’s hectic remodeling. There is no doubt that this interior Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurant has made its mark on the Austin community. Like Home Slice, the atmosphere is just as much a reason to go as the food. The live upbeat music is contagious as everyone around is in great spirits. Additionally, the food is the perfect Tex-Mex comfort food for any meal.
