Technology and Humanity: A Short Story

A short story that displays the differences between AI and human beings.

An AI-modified boy has known a human girl for a decent amount of time. The girl’s parents, along with other scientists, invented AI, but then everything lost control—AI developed their own consciousness and independent thoughts based on the data/information that humans transplanted on them. They also figured out ways to obtain energy from nature so they no longer needed to be charged by humans for uses. They now seem to have no differences from human beings, only more intelligence and physical strength.

The girl grows up playing with young AI in the lab. Her best friend is the AI boy. They are of a similar age (the boy is actually a few months older than the girl), so they are seventeen and eighteen years old by the time the first AI vs. human war begins. Since the boy has now developed a mature system of emotions, he is able to communicate with the girl fluently and understand most of her thoughts. In turn, the girl generally knows AI very well, and she and the boy share a deep personal connection. They are now in the sprouting stage of love.

By the middle of the war, humans have fallen to an obvious disadvantage. They now live in shelters and some of them are kept as captives by AI. Many humans even betray their own race in order to survive. As the descendant of a scientist, the girl takes over the responsibility of protecting humans from AI. She tries to find the weaknesses in AI and decipher their codes, but she is unwilling to use the boy as an experiment. The boy, as an AI, is inherently against humans, but he convinces himself to stay with the girl during the war to protect her from his peers’ attacks. Their love is so paradoxical—with lots of suspicion towards, but also attraction to and fondness of, one another.

The day comes. Humans’ ships are being defeated by AI weapons. Fires burn under the precipice above the ocean. AI soldiers stand on the precipice watching with indifference as their former owners drown and cry for help in the cold seawater. The boy stands with the AI, but he suddenly spots the girl drowning in the water. He saves her from the currents and looks over to the massive armies of AI standing on the precipice. The AI are in silence and are perfectly still. Maybe they are moved by the boy’s sincere love for the girl, or maybe they are recalling the time when the girl once called them by their human names and touched them gently.

The girl is rescued and wakes up after receiving treatment from the boy and other friendly AI. She cries when she sees everything happening in front of her. She seems to recall how her parents have been killed by rebelling AI and how she was unable to save them. The boy holds her tightly in his arms. He can’t seem to understand why the girl is so sad when she is among the few survivors of the war. But his heart breaks for her.

That night, when the AI retreat to their foundations, the AI boy and the girl lie on the same bed whispering to each other. The boy says, what if I could transform you into an AI? The girl does not respond but keeps staring at the steep precipice outside the castle, as if something is calling to her. Then, she rushes out of the room, the castle, to the precipice. The boy follows her but does nothing to stop her.

They are now down at the shore. The boy has dismissed the sentinels guarding along the cliff. There seems to be no trace of life. But the girl is determined. She runs to a stop and stares at the sand. She sees a pair of eyes almost submerged in the sand. Together with the boy, they remove the covering sand and find a female body of the same age as the girl. She is severely injured but still has remaining breath.

“Daisy!” The girl recognizes the body. The boy also recognizes the body and pulls his rifle. He wants to kill her, but the girl prevents him. The boy becomes confused again. “Let me get rid of her. She’s the one who betrayed you in high school.” But the girl falls into tears again. Her fingers cross over the face of the female body and the pair of eyes curl and twinkle with life, but then close again, this time permanently.

The girl stands up, staring at the female body, while the boy keeps his distance. She seems to be smiling, but her eyes are still wet. The moonlight shines over her hair and reflects onto the white dress she is wearing. Her voice is low but firm.

“I’m a human, not an AI.”
