The doctor called, and they’re concerned that social media seems to be having a personality crisis. First we’re in Brat summer, and now we’re in demure fall? But it turns out the two are not as different as they may seem.
Just on Labor Day, Charli XCX declared the end of Brat summer. It seems that despite her recent challenges to claims that Brat summer is dead, the internet is dimming this Essex icon’s limelight. Charli’s closing of her trend on Labor Day might make sense, as some critics concede that this holiday bookends summer. But it seems as though demure fall has something to do with the death of the lime green posts on social media.
“Very demure, very mindful,” is what TikTok creator Jools Lebron said on a viral video. Little did she know that these words of satiric professional advice would kickstart an entire trend that would pivot the focus of teenagers and young adults. Unlike Brat summer, demure fall holds modesty over excess and prefers its confidence quiet rather than loud. Because it seemed as though the two trends could not co-exist, the internet began to shift its focus from Brat summer and toward demure fall.
But we can’t talk about Lebron’s post without touching on its hint of satire. In the midst of confusion, Lebron clarified that her advice was “obviously a joke,” and TV stars like Penn Badgley (from Gossip Girl and You) and RuPaul have caught on. So during a season often centered around the feminine subtlety, Lebron’s words seem to poke fun at gender expectations. Doesn’t her rebellious nature remind you of Charli’s?
I think Brat summer had an influence on demure fall. Its focus on individuality has seemed to empower celebrities to challenge societal expectations. But it seems as though social media users are not doing the same, as the some influencers are losing the satire. Regardless, we simply follow whichever way the trend flows…
